In their attempt to surpass the very successful first London World Exhibition of 1851, the organisers of the 1862 London Exhibition made a grave misjudgement. In an Exhibition Palace that was criticised on account of its enormous dimensions as being monstrous and ugly, it is true that more exhibits were displayed by more exhibitors from more participating countries, but, due to their sheer volume, it was barely possible to present the outstanding products and innovative developments in an adequate manner. Nevertheless, this World Exhibition made an enormous contribution to popularising technological progress. The six million visitors also ensured that the Exhibition closed having succeeded in making a modest profit.
