Introduction

The New York business circles organising the first important world exhibition in the biggest city of the world in 1939 had a definite aim: they wanted to show that the World of Tomorrow could only be build by powerful companies. That is why they granted automobile and electric goods companies a lot of space for self-portrayal used to present visionary shows and true novelties like the TV set. This concept inspired 50 million visitors in two years. As a focal point of the site in Flushing Meadows Trylon and the Perisphere were created, a spire and a huge white orb, in which Democracity was on show – the city of the future.
