Country Profile

Argentina

"Argentina - the silver one"

Argentina is overwhelming: with its vastness and its multitude of contrasting landscapes, with unique natural beauty spots and its great diversity of climatic zones. It is a country of extremes and contrasts.
The sea and high mountains create natural borders: the Atlantic to the east, the Andes to the west. In between stretch the fertile plains of the Pampa. In the north, at the famous Iguazú waterfalls, a tropical climate predominates, - an extreme contrast with Tierra del Fuego, 4000 kilometres further south. Despite its name, which promises sun and heat, freezing Antarctic temperatures characterise the Tierra del Fuego, where glaciers and eternal ice are to be found. Ushuaia is the southernmost town on earth. It is the point of departure for excursions into Antarctica.

One of the country's oldest cities is Córdoba, which was founded in 1573. It is the seat of a renowned university. During Spanish colonial times mule caravans set off from here towards the north and the legendary treasures of the submerged Inca Empire. The conquerors hoped to find treasures and mineral resources here and it is this vision which is supposed to have given the region its name: Argentina, literally, the silver one. Other sources, however, attribute the name to the silver glow of the Rio de La Plata.

Already at the beginning of the 19th century the yoke of colonial rule was shaken off and in the following decades the state of Argentina was born. And with the new economic upswing the republic became an attractive country for immigration. To this day Argentina, although not entirely free from crises, is one of the leading economic powers in Latin America.
